Chapter 2a

Sorry all, I know it’s been awhile since the last chapter, almost 2 weeks I think, so will divide this chapter into two and hope to complete them both tonight.

When last we left this saga, I had just arrived in Washington NC, and that’s not a typo, that’s NC not DC.  It’s a little town just east of Greenville. Pleasant little motel called of course the Washington Motel, ran me $35 a night, so I figured that since that was the cheapest motel I’d seen and was clean and near all kinds of stores – namely WalMart and Home Depot – I’d go ahead and thin my possessions and reorganize the load. Also, the snow and cold that swept across the south was bearing down on me, and having driven all day in the rain the second day out I was not anxious to repeat that.

So stayed there a couple days and got to know a little bit about a few of the people in the motel.  Apparently they only pay the maids $2 per room they clean, and $2.50 if the person has left and they have to completely clean the room.  No hourly wage, and if there’s only 10 rooms to clean they only make $20.  Since they stay at the motel, at the end of the week, most of their check goes back to the motel for rent.  Apparently they have to sign a contract in order to work there, so they’re considered a contractor instead of an employee.  Seems not too different from stories I remember reading when I was younger about company towns and indentured servants, but who am I to judge.

Anyway, donated most of my books and some clothes to the local Goodwill, gave a few items that might be useful to the maid and left some of the heavier items behind.  In addition I threw out an entire garbage can (55 gallon variety) of excess crap that I had thrown in the car in my haste to pack – didn’t really need all those hundreds of pictures of the Puerto Rican Day and the West Indian Day parades over the years, nor all the pics from Orchard Beach.  So, while the car is still over loaded and riding a bit low, it feels much better than it did, and feels much safer.

On the third day there, Mon, the 7th, the sun shown bright, and I figured it was time to continue on.  Went on down Hwy 17 and made it into Charleston SC that night.  Saw a sign for a motel for $32.99, and when I registered I chose to not see the “no pets” in the midst of a much larger sign with rules and regulations, so the next morning as I was getting back from walking the dog the manager and wife we shoutin and yellin at me telling me I had 10 minutes to check out or I’d be getting charged for another night or some such.  Which really sucked since I hadn’t had a shower or anything, but I figure that was on me.  So, after finally finding the cat, who’d gotten spooked bad and found the smallest sliver of a crack to slide behind, I made it out and on my way.

Stopped in a little wildlife preserve (see the photos) just outside Charleston a ways and had caught my breath, then pressed on.  Figured I’d try to make it to Florida that day since I was really hoping for warmer weather.  So, I slid by a little town called Dale SC, and past Savannah GA, which everyone says is just the loveliest town ever – I’ll have to go back someday and check it out – and on into Florida.  Did you know they give you free samples of either OJ or Grapefruit juice at the welcome center on I-95?  Thought that was pretty cool.

Got off the Interstate as soon as possible and started down 301 towards Ocala and the middle of the state.  Figured the gulf side of FL was where I’d rather be since the water should be a degree or two warmer there than it would be on the Atlantic side.  So, I rolled into Lawty FL in the evening and saw the Sleepy Hollow Motel which looked cheap but fairly clean.  Also saw a ‘Beware the Dachshund’ sign on the door and figured they’d be ok with the dog at least.  Nice little spot, except there’s like 3 prisons within 10 miles of the place so that put a bit of a damper on the whole thing since I just kept thinking about escaped convicts, lol.  Silly me.

Still hadn’t gotten the car organized to where I was able to sleep in it, so was staying in motels.  At this point I’m a week into the trip and feeling like a tourist, albeit a cheap one, but since checkout time is always at 11am there wasn’t much time to pull all my stuff out and reorganize it so I could finally sleep in the back.

Anyway, I realized that Shirley, my sister’s good friend, was just down the road a bit and pretty much on the way to St. Petersburg which was where I wanted to hit the coast and beaches.  So contacted her and arranged to meet her for lunch the next day.  She’s in Leesburg FL, and somehow I made it pretty much on time, lol.  Was a lovely long lunch, and I can see why my sister likes her so much.  Just hope I didn’t get her in trouble for taking such a long lunch, but it was close to 2:30 or so by the time I started back down the road.

Made St. Petersburg that night and after driving around and looking for a motel unsuccessfully I went ahead and looked in the coupon books I’d picked up at the welcome center and found a fairly cheap motel to spend the night.  Of course I made a couple wrong turns and went through a couple of side streets where it was like a nightmare version of ho’s and pimps.  Now if I’d been looking for that section I’d have never found it, but I wasn’t and apparently in St Pete you don’t have to look that hard.  Anyway after getting the F outta that area I finally made it to the motel and felt like I’d gotten to where I could relax and not have to drive 7-8 hrs a day.

And that takes us to the evening of Wed, Dec 9, and the last time I stayed in a motel.  But I’m going to have to pick this up after getting out of the car and stretching a bit and taking the dog for a bit of a walk.  I’ll be back soon with Chapter 2b of this, ok?

Chapter 1

So, even though I gave a whole bunch of stuff away, and abandoned some more, this car is ridin loooow.  Finally got all the stuff I thought I might need loaded at 4:00pm Monday, Dec 1, called my dad and got his blessings and prayer and final advice (flip flops) and pulled away from the curb at 4:45pm, just in time for rush hour in NYC.  No wonder no one owns a car in NYC…  Anywho, for all that, and in spite of my complete lack of timing it only took an hour to get to Brooklyn and another half hour to get to the Verrazano Bridge.  A couple of stops at rest areas and I got to New Castle DE just after 10pm – yeah I’m taking my time, lol!

I’m gonna have to get somewhere where I can get rid of some of this stuff because the car is riding real low and I can’t really stay in the car if I can’t fold the back down and lay out the bed, I’m not really trying to sleep in the driver’s seat, lol, I ain’t trying to be THAT rough, LOL!  So, thinkin I’m gonna need a spot where I can park and be able to thin out the load and repack so I can fit better.  Then take the excess and donate it.  Only thing is there’s snow coming to the South, which should be interesting to say the least.  So, my thought is to get down the coast fast in order to get south of it and hope it all holds together.  That will cost me more $ though, so therein lies the dilemma.  Did find a nice cheap $35/nt one here in Washington NC though.

Oops, missed a day there, that was yesterday, Dec 2.  Met my friend Tara for lunch at the park right over the bridge in New Castle DE.  There’s the biggest silver statue of what I thought was Jesus welcoming me to DE the night before but turns out that it’s the Virgin Mary instead.  Anyway, it’s huge.  Chit chatted until the rain started and that was the story of the day – rain.  All the way through DE, down through Salisbury, MD and into VA.  Was a real pain in the butt drivin in the monsoon down Hwy 13.  And can I just say that the Captain’s Quarters in Onley VA is the bojanketiest motel ever?  If I hadn’t been so through with driving in the rain I woulda kept going, but I was done.

Today was beautiful and if I hadn’t gotten stuck in the only traffic jam on Hwy 17 in Norfolk, I’d have been much further down the road.  I’ve been taking the smaller hwy’s as they’re much more interesting, but I might have to take the Interstate, because while the small highway has more stuff to look at, it takes a lot longer.  We’ll see how I feel tomorrow.

Anyway, so far this has been rather ordinary, just a car loaded down with crap, and somebody escaping the north and heading south to FL staying at cheap motels, but I’ll try to make it more interesting as I go on, I swear.

Oh, two interesting things today: the Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel 17 mile thing was pretty cool, especially seeing all these big ships lined up to cross over the tunnels.  The other was not so cool, it was a burned out house along the side of the road right at the beginning, near Exmore VA.  Had a hand-painted sign out front that said:  KKK Brun Out.   That was disturbing.  I thought to myself, welcome to the south…

Alright, let me go check on all these emails and catch up with everybody.  More later…

Prologue

The preparations are just about complete for the next phase of my life – that of the roaming nomad, bereft of the usual comforts of home, traveling from one watering hole to the next, searching for who knows what. Only the last few items need to be packed and protected against the vagaries of the road, and I’ll begin loading my car tomorrow (Monday). Even with the inevitable setback, the loading should be completed by tomorrow night allowing me to kick this hare-brained scheme off on Tuesday, December 1.

For those unfamiliar with the madness I call life, I am giving up this lovely apartment in the Bronx and moving into my car, a 1989 Volvo station wagon, and driving around the country – South to Florida, West to Cali, and North to BC – living out of the back along with some nights in a tent and the occasional splurge in a cheap motel. I’ll be taking along only what I can travel with, and my dog Spider and his GF Baby (the cat with him in my profile pic). Along the way, I’ll be stopping wherever it looks interesting and only have one deadline to make – July 2 near Kelowna, BC for my dad’s birthday.

As soon as I can, I’ll get a wireless adapter for this computer and get you all caught up on the adventure. If it goes to plan – and really that’s why I keep the plan simple so it has a chance at success, lol – I should be back online within a couple days.

Those of you in the NYC area who I haven’t had a chance to get out and see before I leave, I’m sorry and I have every intention of being back here late next summer as this is really as close to home as I have. It’s been an arduous process wrapping up 21 years in NYC and 13 in this apartment. Hopefully I”ll bring back some of the love of the city and life that I seem to have misplaced along the way, and which I hope to recover.

Oh, and if you’re not that interested in hearing all the minutiae of this adventure, just let me know and I’ll take you off the list. No sweat, we still cool.

Anywho, wish me luck, and if you’re on the way and want me to stop by for a cup of coffee or somethin, let me know.

The writing in this blog is not by me. It is of my brothers travels with his dog Spider and so interesting that I just wanted to share.
